Enter to Worship, Leave to Serve

The history of St. Andrew’s Episcopal Church dates back to the Summer of 1923 when a layman of Emmanuel Episcopal Church, at the request of his rector, The reverend A. Van Debeck Voos, visited the families of Clason point, Bronx, New York, whose names were on the registry of the former chapel of the Holy Spirit. The Right Reverend William T. Manning, Suffragan Bishop of the Episcopal Diocese of New York, approved the petition to receive St. Andrew’s as an organized mission on April 1, 1924.

In 1960, St. Andrew’s moved to its present site on Castle Hill Avenue. The present Church building was constructed as part of the Diocese of New York’s 175th Anniversary. It was built to serve not only the old neighborhood, but also a city within a city called Castle Hill Houses.

Today, it serves other large private and public housing developments in the North and East Bronx. Also, located next to the Church is a 78 unit senior residence, St. Andrew’s House, which the congregation sponsored by providing the land for its development in 1983. Three city blocks away from its present site, in 1983 St. Andrew’s Church sponsored 157 two-family units of housing for middle-income families, known as Saint Andrew’s Village, which served 314 families.

This brief history is, of course, a chapter in the continued mission of St. Andrew’s Parish. Through its parishioners, St. Andrew’s always allows the light of faith in God’s salvation to shine in its pastoral ministry. As a “House of Prayer” for all people, St. Andrew’s is a community of discipleship and of hospitality.
